So I am doing a mini-series where you are basically going to sit down with some of my friends and I and we are going to talk about stuff. Relevant stuff. In November, my friends and I were a bit outraged and disappointed with how many people were being sexually abused in the church. This was brought to our attention because of the #ChurchToo hashtag. In this episode, you are listening to part 1 of our conversation. Even though the “movement” was in November, this is still an issue people need to know about and find solutions too. the way the churches handled the case about telling the kids to forgive the assailant is a hard one. I understand that yes as a christian we’re thought to forgive others when they do wrong to us. But I feel like the wrong message might be sent to the kids who were assaulted by handling it like this. It may make them feel that its OK for someone to do something as wrong to them and maybe even worse, giving them the idea that its OK for them to do it when they get older. There’s different ways to handle that situation, like telling them about what forgiveness is and why its so important to forgive others no matter what they do to you. Basically guiding them to decide to forgive their assailant by themself and not forcing it on them to just forgive the assailant and that’s it.
Good point Emmanuel. Yeah nah I did not agree with how they handled that. They should have focused on the healing of that child and then allowed that child on their own to forgive when they were ready. It’s not a good look at all. Also, they did not hold the abuser accountable because the person who wrote that was an adult speaking about her childhood so, at the end of the day, she didn’t feel justice on her behalf was given.
